Negotiating like a Brooklyn Optician
The politically incorrect name of this scheme comes from a shady optician who would sell glasses piece by piece.
Divide the lot, or job, into parts and negotiate them individually First negotiate or sell the major point or item. Once they’ve agreed to your terms for the first thing, then explain how additional parts are required. Dodge disclosing the final price until the other party has approved all items.
Example
Some of us will encounter this sly salesman when buying a car. They will take you out to test drive a vehicle loaded with all available options. When you ask the price they will impress you with one lower than you expected. After agreeing to buy the car, they start sneaking in the true cost of the car fully loaded. Since you are already emotionally committed to that vehicle, you might agree to their terms, albeit reluctantly, and sign the purchase order with an amount well above the original quote.
