Negotiating like a Call Girl
In shifty situations where you have little or no trust for the other party, order to be paid or have the service performed, before the exchange is made.
You feel more secure making the other person go first in this type of exchange. At the same time, the other person may feel a little apprehension in hopes that you will follow through with your part of the deal. Meeting your part of the bargain will create a certain amount of trust which can be used in future deals.
Example
Your construction company’s business is struggling due to the down economy. You decide to take odd jobs as a handy man until business picks back up. Your primary method of advertising is Craigslist.
The first job you get called to is in the bad part of town. The client wants you to repair the fence while he is at work. He says that he will come home early to pay you. You have your doubts, but you go anyway because you need the money.
When you get to the job you realize the house is a dump. You don’t want to be judgmental, but time is money and you can’t be taking chances on not getting paid. You call the client at work and ask him to meet you early so that you can be paid up front. The client is also hesitant, since he cannot stay and has to return to work before you are finished.
After you ease his fears that you are truly a professional, he gives you the cash. The relationship turns out to be beneficial to both you and the client since he pays well, you do a great job, and he needs a lot of work done on his house!
