Escalating Demand

Start off by asking for something small. This can be something that requires no action on their part, but by giving them a chance to say “yes” sets an agreeable atmosphere. When the other party complies with your minor request, ask for something bigger and keep on asking for more until they refuse.

Example

A teenager wants to go shopping, to dinner, and the movies with her friends. The parents want to have a relaxing afternoon at home. She firsts asks if one friend comes over, then another. After her friends arrive, she asks for a ride to the mall. Then at the mall, she asks if it’s ok that she stays for a movie and dinner, she doesn’t mention that she needs money for both until the parent’s comply. Once the wallet is out, she asks for an extra $50 to go shopping for shoes—the parents stop her because she has gone too far.
