Discussing Politics

Some people love to talk politics. Others won’t touch the topic with a ten foot pole. Since today is the first Tuesday in November, yes Election Day, I thought it would be appropriate to layout guidelines for the discussion of politics.

Guidelines for Discussing Politics:politics

Don’t attack the other side or in any way act self-righteous. When you take the “I’m better than you” attitude, others are likely to disagree with your point just because they don’t like the way you presented the information. Instead, always be respectful and polite, regardless of whether or not you agree with what they are trying to sell. Acting any other way will do nothing but hurt your cause.

Be open to hearing other’s views, but independently investigate their position further before you are swayed to their side. You are not always right. I’m sure you knew this already, but I thought you might need a reminder. Cutting yourself off from hearing different opinions and perspectives is just plain ignorant. You should consider what others are saying, but at the same time do not change a major opinion just from what one person says. Instead, discuss the issue with others and do your own research before you make up your mind.

It’s okay to acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not all options are right. Modern tolerance has gone too far. Every American is entitled to their right to voice their own opinion. Freedom of Speech is our First Amendment, after all. If a generally hands-off topic, such as religion in schools, is important to you do not be afraid to let your stance be known.

If the other side doesn’t want to hear what you’re saying, or just plainly doesn’t care, get a clue and shut your mouth. Sometimes those who love to debate politics (you know who you are) will talk the ear off of anyone who will listen. If these innocent bystanders are too polite to stop your rant, consider their off-standish body language and lack of participation in the conversation as a sign that you need to find a new topic of discussion.

Be aware that people of different ethnic backgrounds may have other views on the discussion of politics that may not be your cultural norm. In some parts of the world, being up to date on the politics of the world and your home nation may be expected. In other areas, politics are not viewed so highly and discussing them may be taboo. Before you travel ou t of the country, whether it is for business or pleasure, make sure you do some research beforehand so you know the customary view on the discussion of politics.

Just a Reminder—Your voice matters! Make sure to vote today!
